preparing for collegiate success

I just came across information from the U.S. Dept of Ed, called the Tool Box Revisited. This was issued about a year ago (February 2006). What caught my attention is this passage:

"The highest level of mathematics reached in high school continues to be a key marker in precollegiate momentum, with the tipping point of momentum toward a bachelor's degree now firmly above Algebra 2. But in order for that momentum to pay off, earning credits in truly college-level mathematics on the postsecondary side is de regeur."

"By the end of the second calendar year of enrollment, the gap in credit generation in college-level mathematics between those who eventually earned bachelor's degrees and those who didn't is 71 to 38 percent."

I think what this report is saying, someone correct me if I've miss interpreted, is that unless you take "truly" college level math in high school, not pseudo, higher-order thinking skills with real world applications, your chances of getting ANY bachelor's degree is about 38%. Yikes!

  1. That's not how I read it. He's saying for the momentum to pay off, once the student is in college, that student should take a "post secondary" math class. I.e., calculus, linear algebra, etc.

  2. I don't think its entirely that simple.

Some students who don't take Algebra 2 still get in college, and these ones are probably the ones who don't take higher level college courses, and very unlikely to graduate. For the students who do complete Algebra 2, they should continue to take higher level courses, but I don't think just taking the courses is going to cause more students to graduate.

Brighter students are more likely to enroll in higher level math courses, but even if the didn't, they are still going to be more likely to graduate.

I suspect if we enroll more less bright students in higher level math courses, they will find themselves overwhelmed. This could conceivably cause even more of them to drop out.

Summary: Participation in higher level math courses is probably just an indicator/proxy for the underlying reason for college success i.e. high iq and/or self-dicipline.
