I've conquered getting on this blog!

I'm so excited. Solving a problem that's been bugging me for days--no matter how insignificant it is to others--is a natural high for me. Now that I can submit and comment to this blog, all you folks may REALLY be sorry-- 'cause I'm retired now and have SO much more time to offer viewpoints!

  1. Congratulations and Welcome!

I still have no idea how to post. I guess when I have something interesting to say I'll figure it out or call Catherine.

  2. I don't know how to post either! But I would love to see Niki post some comments on the latest criticism of the KIPP schools (KIPP student attrition patterns eyed--EdWeek June 13, 2007).

Even if student attrition from KIPP schools is high (and there is debate about that) why would that necessarily reflect badly on KIPP? KIPP schools demand a level of commitment that many students and families may be unwilling or unable to sustain. Those students and families are free to make other choices, and I don't know why KIPP should be held responsible when they do. I'm guessing that part of the success of KIPP schools is that they expect every student to be committed to learning. The kids who stay have their commitment rewarded with a superior education.

The real question to ask is not about the kids who leave the KIPP schools, but about the kids who stay. Would they have been achieving at the same level in typical district schools?
