Box 'O Whiskers

Last weekend our local newspaper published Sample Tests for our state's assessments. Oh how I wish I could post a link to it, but it's not online anywhere! I guess they're catching on to us.

I couldn't resist sharing this wonderful, new (to me) graphing option I discovered while looking over the questions: the Box andWhisker Plot.

  1. Saxon does these box and whisker plots. Who knew?

  2. I can do box and whiskers graphs - learned them in Saxon.

They're actually a good idea (I think). Of course now I've forgotten exactly how they work -- can't remember if the outer ends are the outlier points.

In any case, these graphs convey the idea that there is life beyond mean, median, and mode.

  3. This is funny.

Carolyn was just complaining about box and whiskers plots yesterday.

I'll get her email posted later.

  4. I remembered right. (No idea whether "I remembered right" is grammatically correct...)

The endpoints are the minimum and maximum.

Box and whisker plots give you a sense of the distribution of a set of grades, say.

I'd love to be given box-and-whisker plots for the grades in C's classes.
