"reality" in Palo Alto

I think it depends on the elementary school. My kids are in middle school now and they have quizzes. I'm not opposing EDM on my own family's account, since my kids aren't in elementary school any more. But, having survived TERC and managed to become proficient in math through our own non-PAUSD enrichment, my kids are an example of what you should not have to do. And I care about the kids whose parents can't coach them through. I hated having to spend precious playtime grinding on math while they wasted their time in school, but at least I was able to get them where they needed to go. In our family's experience, this is a town of special deals, where if you get something for your own family you shut up about the problem, but I am against special deals too and think public education should serve everyone.

  1. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would think that the sons of the ruling class are being shepherded into gifted and talented (GATE) programs where they are taught math, while the others are given enough sleight-of-hand spiraling so that they believe they can never understand math, and are completely credulous of anyone who can do it.

Of course I'm not a conspiracy theorist :). It's far more likely this situation has come about through ignorance and apathy, than through the work of an evil illuminati.

This is, of course, exactly what they want us to believe ... :-)

  3. yes, when powerful people act in their own interest
they always publish all the details even though
this is against their own interests. nobody knows why.
with great power comes great responsibility, maybe.
anyway, these poor saps are unable to keep a secret.
this is why conspiracy theories are absurd
on their face. everybody knows this.
