Speaking of books, I found a copy of College Board's 101 Great Books Recommended for College-Bound Readers in last year's PlannerPad.
I think I've read 33 of them.
Am contemplating reading the other 67. Just by coincidence, I began reading All Quiet on the Western Front just yesterday.
I guess that gives me a running start.

ReplyDeleteI've read 36 of them, mostly due to a good high school teacher.

Yes, she was a great teacher. I was lucky enough to have her for two years.
In addition to being assigned lots of good literature, we had 25 vocabulary words a week in 11th grade, and 50 vocabulary words a week in 12 grade. Even though I've forgotten the vast majority of them (I think), it's still helpful when reading The Economist, or when my husband runs across a word in his reading that's unfamiliar to him.
And, she taught us to write. We had to write regularly and she would go through all our essays and make helpful comments. (Boy, I sure wouldn't want to be an English teacher.) One of her comments that I remember is to pick a single point and discuss only that. I often see editorials in the newspaper that veer from one point to another, or that seem to have no main point. Thank you, Ms. Stalder-Burke.
