no parent hires a constructivist tutor

Just saying.

  1. Hmmm. I know plenty of parents who hire ineffective tutors. These tutors teach reading using Whole Language or Balanced Literacy during the school day and then tutor their fellow teachers' students after school and over the summer.

  2. Unfortunately, that just isn't true.

You could amend it to, "No knowledgeable parent hires a constructivist tutor," but at present the market for constructivist tutoring is booming.

Many teachers in my district do Whole Language / Reading Recovery tutoring on the side(not for students in their own school-- that is considered a conflict of interest) at top dollar. Other private tutoring services specialize in similar practices. Constructivist math tutoring is also flourishing.

On the other hand, there is a strong demand for more traditional tutoring -- phonics, DI, systematic math and so forth. But alas, the ineffective practices in schools actually have a lot of parental and public support, despite their ineffectiveness.
