I haven’t even opened my second box of Pop Tarts yet and this s*** is already over. Unreal. I have 2 pounds of cold cuts and 6 unopened bottles of wine. Looks like it’s gonna be Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Boars Head and a nice Cabernet for my Sunday Funday.Same here. Ed says in addition to the FIFTEEN CANS of tuna fish he snapped up at Stop n Shop yesterday (the last cans on the shelf!), we have a pound of ham.
Nobody around here eats ham any more, either.
Ed says, "At least I didn't buy Pop Tarts."
Now we're debating whether you can eat Pop Tarts raw. C. says Yes, you can.
We're experiencing the anti-climax here on LI, too.
ReplyDeleteBTW, there's a lot you can do with tuna besides drenching it in mayo and sticking it in a sandwich:

Nicoise salad, classically made with canned tuna, also features in-season local tomatoes, new potatoes and green beans. Another neat sandwich is pan bagnat, made on French bread. Also check out tuna tetrazzini, a casserole that freezes well. Tuna also makes a nice pot pie, with a white sauce base (with white wine, if you like), mushrooms, peas, carrots and baby onions - top with pastry, biscuits or phyllo. My first-stop websites are www.williams-sonoma.com and www.epicurious.com.
ReplyDeleteYou can eat pop tarts raw. My dad used to buy them for our camping trips, which was my only opportunity to eat them as a child.
ReplyDeletePop tarts are merchanting item at my kids' high school. Bring a box, sell each foil package for the same price as the lunchroom does, and make a small profit.
ReplyDeleteOur power was out for nine hours..still have some crackers and cheese in case the wind picks up more. We've got flickering now which I guess is better than a brownout
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipes!
I LOVE nicoise salad.
Hainish - didn't know you were on LI -- it must have been pretty windy there, no?
ReplyDeleteWe've been hearing sirens all day, so I actually don't know how much damage there is to trees & power lines ---
Our section of Broadway is closed, along with another street in town. (I'm pretty sure the Broadway that runs through the river towns is the same Broadway that runs through Manhattan.)
The Hudson parks here are closed, but I don't know if they flooded.
Still and all, this is nowhere near as bad as treemageddon, judging by the leaves and branches down just around the house.
ReplyDeleteOooooo, salade nicoise (wish I had the accent under the c). Yummy. My sister lived in Nice for a couple of years while her husband was in the Sixth Fleet (is it still based there?). Her salade nicoise that she brought home also included boiled eggs and anchovies on top. The anchovies add a certain je ne sais quoi to the mix -- I don't ordinarily care for anchovies but they are GREAT in salade nicoise. Try it!
ReplyDeleteWe already had lots of tuna in the house because we eat a lot of it. I am found of tuna and chickpea salad. We also keep PopTarts around. We like them for camping and car trips. For the hurricane, I only bought things that we would eat normally, so we ended up with more canned soup in the house than normal - but since the kids are home this week, it will get eaten
ReplyDeletePoptarts are best raw. Does anyone near central Virginia who has electricity want a gazillion jars of home-canned strawberry jam, only slightly thawed out?
ReplyDeleteCatherine, I was writing a response on Sunday to the effect that Irene had been rather uneventful when a strong gust blew and the power went out. (It's back on now.)
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, there was not much rain or flooding in my area. Just a few tree limbs down.
Bonnie, tuna and chickpea salad gets eaten at my house pretty often.
For the record...poptarts aren't "raw". Putting them in toaster is like putting in bread to be browned. Sorry, couldn't resist.
ReplyDeleteHow did I not know this?

ReplyDeleteYou broke the golden rule, Hainish!

ReplyDeleteoh, man
I do!
I have never in my life eaten a pop tart.
ReplyDeleteI guess that shows.
