Elizabeth Wissner-Gross

Great minds think alike.

At least I think they do.

I'm thinking that, a year or so ago, Steve H told us about Elizabeth Wissner-Gross' book and website, What Colleges Don't Tell You (And Other Parents Don't Want You to Know).

I don't see her website now.... but here is her blog.

Then today Susan S sent an email telling me about a great book called What High Schools Don't Tell You. She says it's great.

I'm ordering it.

Then I'm going to try to find my copy of the college book, which is around here somewhere....

..........................

I am semi returned to email.

Semi.

(Premack principle rocks!)

Yesterday I picked up the Sparknotes College Planner. I'm really enjoying this one, which sets out to give students and families advice beginning in 9th grade.

It's a somewhat tongue in cheek planner written for the student.

Here's an excerpt:

If you have a filing cabinet, use it. If not, find an old milk crate and use that as your filing cabinet. (Take out the old milk first.) Get some folders and a marker to label each folder. You can start by labeling the folders with the following: grades/transcripts; awards; articles by and/or about me; summer programs and jobs; scholarships; art or writing portfolio; resume; other important papers for college

Simple advice that I wish I'd have had when I was in HS. Too many late nights searching (and forgetting) about some award or some box I needed to fill in and didn't have the paperwork handy.

Anyway, I like the book. I like the pages under college visit journal. About 20 pages to list impressions and rate colleges you might visit; including a space for "what mom or dad thought" and what's the dining hall like? Ending with a 5 point rating system at the bottom of each page. The 11th and 12th grade sections are broken up month by month to keep track of deadlines and everything else

See, I feel like we need to get organized. S. is entering 10th grade and it all seems to be coming at us much quicker.

How do you sign up for the PSAT? Is it too soon to go to a college fair? . . . .

Anyway, one more book to add to the growing list.

Lynn,

Get this book ASAP. It's an eye-opener. You'll get info you never heard about. I am rushing around now trying to make sure my 7th grader is registered for the ACT this fall at our local high school.

Here's the website:

I bought the What High Schools Don't Tell You book. I have the other on order.

The website doesn't appear to have a whole of info on it, but the book is PACKED with tips and advice that you can't hound out of your school.

Am looking for the Spark Notes book now...

Lynn - do you have the ISBN on the College Planner?

Not finding it at Amazon.

Maybe I should check B&N.

Yes, that's the ISBN, Catherine.

Sorry it took awhile to respond, I've been in a state of chaos pending our departure for vacation Friday afternoon. Having a pet sitter crisis at the moment.
