In the mail today:
Andrew has been invited to travel as Sports Ambassador to the People to People Tennis Invitational in Vienna, Austria.
I'm thinking about telling them yes.

They do what they do.
Thinking about schools and peers and parent-child attachments....I came across one of my favorite posts .

Wait a little. Look at the exact itinerary. Look at who is going and who are the chaperones. Look at the cost. Often, students stay with local families for a few days. Find out the details. Compare it with other opportunities. Almost all students get one of these People to People offers at one time or another. The angle is that it's an honor and that the student was carefully selected. The cost is not an honor.
My niece went on one to France an England and I know about it because she hit us up for contributions. That's part of the plan. I think she sent us one of their form letters. I looked into People to People and you could say I'm a tad cynical. I would like a business that brought in customers by enticing teachers and offering honors to students. You might want to ask exactly how they got his name.
It might be a good opportunity, but you should keep your eyes open for other opportunities.
My son went to Australia with People to People. Yes, it was a little expensive, but it was a great experience for him. He went as a 6th grader. When he started college this fall he found out there was a People to People introductory meeting on campus and called us to ask for his pictures of the trip so he could give a small presentation at the meeting as someone who had participated in the past.
But... Isn't Andrew autistic? I don't know where they get kids' names. I never knew how they heard about my son who, by the way, has Asperger Syndrome.
Schools and teachers give them names. It's an honor only in the sense that teachers won't give them just anyone's name. My son got a letter when he was in 6th grade, but I never found out how that happened. I don't know why kids get selected for some trips and not others. Do teachers sign up to chaperone for certain trips and then have to provide names?

Andrew is WAAAAAYYYYY autistic.
I was joking about saying Yes.
I thought I saw a gleam in your eye when you posted about saying yes.
oh, yeah....
I'm still contemplating just exactly what People to People would do if Andrew turned up in Vienna.
