C. informs us that, in his remaining weeks of 7th grade, he is to "construct an artifact."
Specifically, a Civil War sword.

I think this is what I find the most annoying about middle school social studies. I expect your e-mail is something about creating weapons for a school project, but the e-mail I wish I had the gumption to write would be all about assigning long involved projects that test art skills more than history/social studies knowledge. Bleah.

And, I expect, you would be wrong. Pointless arts & crafts projects with little bearing on the subject matter is one of our biggest pet peeves here, and I suspect that is precisely the subject Catherine's email.

You must be new around here!
The ONE thing I like about this assignment is that BOYS ARE ALLOWED TO CONSTRUCT WEAPONS.
The teacher is a career changer who has kids, one of whom, I believe, is a middle-school boy.
Used to be a prosecutor.

Well, it sounds like we agree. I am new (I just browsed over to this blog a few days ago from another one). I expect I shall enjoy reading the older posts when I get around to it.
Send him with a musket.

Of course now I'm trying to think what is THE single most outrageous thing I've ever had the utter lack of good sense to post on the internet...
there are so many choices
I did mean a toy one. That may not have been clear. I was short on coffee.
