Problem complexity and higher-order thinking
Burger King math (silly to post it on both blogs).

They do what they do.
Thinking about schools and peers and parent-child attachments....I came across one of my favorite posts .

Excellent essay.
A couple of questions:
1) The first problem that you present seems underspecified. Specifically, "acceptable variance" isn't defined within the problem. What probability of excursion outside the specified range is "acceptable"?
2) Do you present simplified problems (like the last one) in class to be able to present more realistic problems (including cost of line setup, variable cost of production with volume, and so on) as just extensions of the method? (That particular problem is solvable by inspection.)
